How to create a Vision Board that works

How to create a vision board that works

I have had a vision board for more years than I can remember. I like pictures of what things I will do or aim for as a regularly reminder (if even subconsciously) of the things I am aiming for.

Key steps to creating a vision board that works are:

  1. Decide your goals, habits and hobbies

The first step to a vision board is visioning your life. This can be done a number of ways such as:

  • daydreaming about how you want your life to be

  • doing a life audit

  • braining storming ideas

  • assessing existing goals - are they still what you want

  • Doing a 1 year, 3 year and 5 year planning exercise.

2. Decide if your vision board will be focused or not

You need to decide if you will have a vision board that puts all your visions/goals/habits/wants on the one board or be more targeted. I have always had lots of things on my vision boards. However, I have read a couple of blogs that suggest that vision boards should be focused on 3 to 5 things.

3. Look for pictures and words to go onto your vision board

In this step you find photos that represent your plans, goals, and hobbies. This could be from magazines, online, or existing photos. For example, I have a photo from when I was more fit and slimmer than now on my vision board to show my vision for improving my fitness and losing some weight.

Ideas for putting things on vision board include:

  • Your family or spouse (reflecting loving them as a key priority)

  • Magazine picture of a meal (to reflect want to cook more or improve cooking skills)

  • pinning money to the board (to reflect - saving will be a key focus)

  • inspirational saying or bible verse or word or them for the year (to remind of what is important or provide comfort or inspiration).

It is up to you whether you create a digital vision board or have a physical one. A vision board does not need to be on a board. It could be blue tack items on a door or pictures on a piece of cardboard. I personally use a cork board as it is easy to stick pictures on and make changes.

4. Choose where to put your vision board

Vision boards need to be in a place where you are likely to see it regularly. However, vision boards are also quite personal to the person so you might want to put it somewhere that visitors will not see.

A vision board could be located:

  • inside door of a wardrobe

  • wall in a home office

  • on a dresser in your bedroom

  • inside your diary or planner.

5. Review your vision board when your review your plans

It is important when you are thinking about new goals and doing planning for your life you also adjust your vision board. Are there things that you no longer want to pursue. - remove them from the board. Are there new things to add?

Vision boards are a visual reminder of your goals, plans and hobbies

Whether it is consciously looking at the board and reminding yourself to schedule things to achieve your vision board or subconsciously it reminds you of what you want - vision boards help remind you of your dreams, goals, plans and hobbies.
